This Flower Festival has taken place every other year for the
last 14 years. For a few days only the stones of this 800 year
old cathedral come alive with the spectacular displays of
flowers presented by groups, guilds and individuals. Some of the
exhibits reflect the history of the
Cathedral, others the spirituality. They combine to make it
a ‘must’ on the horticultural calendar. There are stalls and a
Summer Market around the Cathedral at this time. |

| ROSES AT HATFIELD HOUSE |
| |
 |
|
Meet Elizabeth at Kings Cross Railway Station
by the ticket office at 10:00 hrs. with a return rail ticket to
Hatfield. We will travel together by train to Hatfield. Hatfield
House is directly opposite the railway station. (Unfortunately
there is no lift at Hatfield Station). |
|
| Hatfield House will be decorated with summer
flowers today, as part of Hatfield House’s Rose weekend. There
is also a festival in the adjoining 12th century church of St
Etheldreda’s. From 1607 to 1611, Robert Cecil, 1st Earl of
Salisbury, built his fine Jacobean House adjoining the site of
the Old Palace of Hatfield. The House was splendidly decorated
for entertaining the Royal Court with state rooms, rich in
paintings, fine furniture and tapestries. Visitors can see
superb examples of Jacobean craftsmanship throughout Hatfield
House, such as the grand staircase with its fine carving and the
rare stained glass window in the private chapel. |
| |
|
Pay on the day direct to Hatfield House. Please let Elizabeth
know if you are coming, so she knows who to look out for at
Kings Cross.

the then fashionable classical style. Robert Adam also worked on the
Gatehouse and other buildings in the grounds. The Castle was sold by the
Duke of Manchester to Kimbolton School in 1950. The school is still using
the building and it is because of the school holidays that we are able to
