    We have a guided tour of the home of Edward Heath in the Cathedral Close. The house dates back to the l3th century. Sir Edward Heath had many interests which are reflected in Arundells: his love of music, sailing and his collection of objects d’art, paintings, ceramics and political cartoons. The group will be divided into groups of 10 for this tour. There is free time to visit the Cathedral and other properties in the Close.

The nearest underground station is Bank
 
    We have a guided tour of Mansion House, which was built in 1753 and is residence to the Lord Mayor of London, whose position dates back to 1192. The tour lasts for 45 minutes and highlights the Egyptian Hall, ballroom, the collections of porcelain and plate ware, and other rooms. Following the tour there will be a guided walk via Cornhill, and Leadenhall, through the medieval lanes of the City. We return to the Bank of England

  The hotel is based at Mold for 4 nights. Highlights include a canal trip which crosses the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct (situated in the Llangollen valley, 126ft across the River Dee) and visit to Plas Newydd, the home of the Ladies of Llangollen. There is a steam train ride on the scenic Ffestiniog Railway, which was built for taking slate from the quarries to Port Madog.

We visit Portmeirion, now a conservation site created by Clough William Ellis in 1926. He was a millionaire architect and wanted to illustrate how buildings and beautiful scenery could enhance each other. We also visit Erdigg (NT), once voted the best National Trust property, and Bodnant Garden (NT).

    Our walk includes the historic village, The Kings Head featured as The Maypole in Dickens’ book Barnaby Rudge, the Old Grammar School and Chigwell Hall, designed by Norman Shaw in 1876. We visit the historic parish church of St Mary’s.

  Dunster Castle from the National Trust website   We stay for three nights (DBB) at the Yarn Market Hotel, situated in the beautiful village of Dunster, within the Exmoor National Park

Friday, 12th June, 2009: Travel as a group by National Express coach to the ancient harbour town of Watchet on the north Somerset coast, where we have free time during the afternoon to follow the Heritage Trail and visit the local museum. A local coach takes us to our hotel.
Saturday, 13th June, 2009: Free time in Dunster, with optional visits to Dunster Castle and Gardens. For railway enthusiasts there is a chance to explore the entire route of the West Somerset Railway, which this weekend hosts a special Diesel and Steam Classics event.
Sunday, 14th June, 2009: We head south by coach with a local guide over Exmoor to Tiverton, where our group travels by a horse-drawn barge on a gentle 2-hour journey through the Devon countryside along the Grand Western Canal. (Our group has exclusive use of the barge). Quiet and unspoilt, this historic waterway is now a nature reserve. We then travel by coach to Sheppy’s Cider Farm. Sunday lunch at Sheppy’s is included in the price. Scenic drive with our tour guide back to Dunster.
Monday, 15th June, 2009: We travel on the West Somerset Railway from Dunster to Watchet, where we catch a National Express Coach that will bring us back to London at approximately 17:30 hrs.

  Chartwell from the National Trust website   Depart Embankment Underground Station at 09:00 hrs.  
    We visit the home of Sir Winston Churchill in the 100th anniversary year of his marriage to Clementine Hozier. The Golden Rose Avenue should be at its best at this time of the year. The beautiful house with its stunning views of the Weald of Kent is largely unaltered and reflects his family life and political career. His paintings can be seen in the studio. In the afternoon we visit the World Garden at Lullingstone Castle, created by Tom Hart Dukes, who was captured by terrorists in the South American jungle while hunting for exotic plants. It is an exceptional garden which continues to grow and flourish with new items being added every year.

WALK: MORDEN PARK AND MERTON ABBEY MILLS
  River Wandle at Merton Abbey Mills from Wandle Heritage website   Meet at Colliers Wood Underground Station 11:00 hrs. by ticket machines  
    A 2 hour walk passing the Merton Abbey Mills (grade 2 listed) and the site of the Abbey print works of William Morris. We follow the river Wandle to Morden Hall Park with the exceptional rose displays, wilderness islands and Snuff Mill centre. The 125 acre estate was left to the National Trust in 1941. The tour finishes near Morden Station.

CHERKLEY COURT GARDENS
AND CLANDON HOUSE (NT)
  Cherkley Court from its website   Depart Embankment Underground Station at 09:30 hrs  
  Cherkley Court was acquired by Lord Beaverbrook in 1910. He rebuilt the House in a French chateau style. There were many famous guests including Rudyard Kipling, Harold Macmillan and Winston Churchill. We have a guided garden tour and the house’s history will be revealed. There are terraces, a shell grotto, a canal and Italian gardens. Lunch is on the terrace of the Orangery with breathtaking views over the Mole Valley. Our afternoon visit is to Clandon (NT) where we have an introductory talk. This grand Palladian mansion has a two storey Marble Hall with a superb collection of paintings and furnishings. The attractive gardens have a parterre, Dutch garden and grotto.

HOGLANDS HOME OF HENRY MOORE AND STUDIOS

    We have tea/coffee and biscuits on arrival and then our guided tour of the house ‘Hoglands’, where Henry Moore and his wife lived for over 40 years. The Henry Moore foundation was founded in 2004, and displays and studios are now open to guided groups only. There will be a break for lunch in a nearby village or those who wish there is a picnic area. In the afternoon there are guided tours of the gardens and parkland with an array of sculpture. We visit various studios and galleries including the Aisled Barn in which tapestries are displayed. There is a textile exhibition from the drawings he made to produce designs of fabric and scarves.

The nearest underground station is Hammersmith.
 
  This delightful walk along the river passes many historic buildings. We finish at Fulham Palace, the Bishop of London’s residence; we visit the palace and museum

WALK: RIVER LEE MEANDER

The Bus Station is next to Canning Town Dockland Light Railway Station.
 
  We explore Bow Creek Ecology Park and walk along one of the meanders of the River Lee to the East India Dock basin, which now forms part of the Lee Valley Regional Park nature reserve. We finish the walk at approximately 13:00 hrs at East India Dock DLR Station.

OXFORD & CHRIST CHURCH COLLEGE VISIT
    Depart Embankment 09:00 hrs., Hammersmith Bus Stop S, 09:40 hrs.  
    We visit the largest college in Oxford: Christ Church, founded by Cardinal Wolsey in 1525 and re-founded by Henry VIII. The college contains the Cathedral of Oxford dating back to the priory of St. Frideswide in the 8th century and rebuilt in the 11th century. There is a guided walk of the centre of Oxford and free time to visit the Ashmolean Museum, other colleges or the Bodleian Library

    The coach picks up at the Embankment and Hammersmith and is accompanied by a tour manager.  We stay at a 4* Hotel in the Babbacombe area of Torquay.  The Hotel has extensive grounds and a wood valley leads to Anstey Bay.  There is a leisure centre with swimming pool and sauna.  All meals are included and afternoon tea.  Also included are visits to Glastonbury Abbey, the Cheddar Gorge, Brixham and a Pantomime.
