The Reform Club

  Meet at statue of Eros, Piccadilly Circus 10:00 hrs  
    We have a guided tour of this club, founded after the Reform Act of 1832 for members of the Whig Party. The splendid building designed by Charles Barry was opened in 1841 and has stunning Victorian interiors. This gentleman’s club has had lady members since 1981.

    Our morning visit is to Portsmouth, with free time to explore the Royal Dockyard and Gunwharf Quays, the new development where the latest national icon, the Spinnaker Tower, was built for the Millennium. Afternoon visit to Stansted Park, a house set in 1750 acres of parkland. It is one of the south’s most elegant homes, a prime example of a Carolean revival with a lavishly decorated chapel, which was an inspiration to the poet Keats. We have a guided tour.

    Lunchtime and free time in Wallingford, with afternoon visit to Dorchester on Thames. At Dorchester we have a guided tour of the Abbey Church of St. Peter and St Paul and visit the small museum of local history in the Old School Room.

  All Saints Poplar from Tower Hamlets History Online   Meet at Limehouse DLR by ticket machines (bottom of stairs) at 11:00 hrs  
    Our walk includes scenic Thameside waterfronts, the Limehouse basin and the Limehouse Cut. We finish our walk with a visit to All Saints Church, Poplar, built in 1823. It is beautifully restored and a reminder of the wealthy people who once lived in this area.

LEONARDSLEE AND WORTH ABBEY

    We visit Worth Abbey, which was featured in the series “The Monastery” on BBC2. A monk will give us a tour of the Abbey and show us the old parts of the public school. The house was built at the turn of the century for the Cowdray family and is a replica of their house in Ireland. It has splendid views over the Sussex countryside and on a clear day you can see the South Downs. We combine our visit with Leonardslee, one of the most beautiful gardens in Sussex, where there is a restaurant and tea room. The garden, famed for its rhododendrons and azaleas, is in a valley with picturesque ponds and a lake.

WALK: OLD BATTERSEA AND CHELSEA
  St Mary's Battersea circa 1820   Meet 11:00 hrs at Clapham Junction Railway Station (trains from Victoria or Waterloo) at the Grant Road exit, which is at the platform 2 end of the tunnel  
    We take a bus to Old Battersea, where we have a special opening of St Mary’s, the Grade 1 Listed Georgian church on the River Thames. Turner painted from this church and William Blake was married here. We walk along the river and cross the Albert Bridge to Cheyne Walk, Chelsea. There are many historic buildings en route and modern architecture including the offices of Norman Foster.

  Lunchtime in Chippenham, with afternoon visit to Great Chalfield Manor for a private guided tour. Great Chalfield Manor is a charming fifteenth century manor house with a colourful garden designed by Alfred Parson. Encircled by a moat and defensive wall, it has ornate Oriel windows, a gatehouse and great hall.

BLENHEIM PALACE & OXFORDSHIRE MUSEUM

    We visit the award winning museum in Woodstock, which is housed in an 18th century house. As we drive into the grounds of Blenheim Palace we see the vista described by Winston Churchill as ‘the finest view in England’. He was born in the palace in 1874; we visit the Churchill exhibition before the guided tour of the state rooms. There is also a new audio tour in the upper rooms called The Untold Story. The palace was completed in 1720 after the Battle of Blenheim, a reward to the 1st Duke of Marlborough who led the battle. The grounds and splendid gardens were laid out by Capability Brown.

CHILTERNS OPEN AIR MUSEUM AND CLIVEDEN (NT)

  The 45-acre museum has thirty rescued historic buildings from the Chilterns area, including a 15th century barn, Victorian farmhouse, a post-war prefab. and a replica iron-age house. Our second visit is to Cliveden, where we have a guided tour of one wing of the house, which is now a five star hotel. The house was originally built in 1666 for the second Duke of Buckingham and was home to three dukes and Frederick Prince of Wales. Queen Victoria was a frequent guest. It was bought by William Astor in 1906 and taken over by his son, Waldorf. Waldorf married American Nancy Langhorne; she became our first lady M.P. Cliveden, meeting place of the great and famous, has splendid gardens with views overlooking the Thames.

PETERSFIELD AND SOUTH DOWNS

    Following lunchtime in Petersfield we explore the South Downs by coach, with local expert Simon Clive (who guided us on our 2007 Suffolk Coast and Heaths holiday). The tour will be on the pattern of previous “villages” tours and will conclude with afternoon tea, included in the price.

HASTINGS FISHERMAN’S MUSEUM AND BODIAM CASTLE, KENT (NT)
  Bodiam Castle in Autumn mist   Depart Embankment Underground Station 09:30 hrs  
    This picturesque moated castle was built in 1385 by Edward Dalyngrigge, who made money in the 100 years’ war. There is an interesting video presentation telling us the history. The castle was saved from destruction by John Fuller, who bought and restored it in 1916. We continue to Hastings, where we visit the Fisherman’s Museum in the Old Town. The museum is set in the Fisherman’s church, bought by local people who wanted to preserve the maritime history of Hastings. We have a talk from the custodian.

EALING WALK AND PITSHANGER MANOR
  Pitshanger Manor   Meet at Ealing Broadway Underground Station 13:30 hrs  
    The walk focuses on Ealing’s historic buildings and finishes with tea/coffee and biscuits at the Manor House, which was the home of John Soane, the architect of the Bank of England. He created a Regency villa with his highly individual design. A custodian will give an introductory talk.

KING HAROLD’S DAY AT WALTHAM ABBEY AND ROYAL HUNTING LODGE, EPPING FOREST
  From Waltham Abbey website   Depart Embankment Underground Station 09:30 hrs. and Redbridge Underground Station 10:00 hrs  
    King Harold was buried at the Norman abbey, and this day celebrates the anniversary of his death at the Battle of Hastings. There are hawks and hunting birds, a craft fayre, mediaeval re-enactments, history and art displays and demonstrations of Saxon crafts set in the grounds of the Abbey. We also visit the Queen Elizabeth Hunting Lodge, built by Henry VIII as a viewing location of the hunt. We have a special opening with a guided tour. The autumn colours in Epping Forest make a scenic drive on our return to London.

CANTERBURY CATHEDRAL AND CHRISTMAS MARKET
  Canterbury Cathedral

    We have a guided tour of the cathedral, which dates back to the abbey founded by St. Augustine in 597. The oldest parts of the present building date to 1070. Pilgrims flocked to Canterbury after the death of Archbishop Thomas Beckett from 1170 until the Reformation. The stained glass compares with the best in France. There is a walking familiarisation tour, and our visit coincides with a Christmas market in the shopping area.
